Why Some Outfits Work… And Some Don’t

If I could rule the world, everyone would be able to wear pajamas all the time and it would be totally acceptable. Until then, I’m here to help guide you on what’s going to look best in your photos and explain to you why it is the way it is. So many different aspects go into what will Look Really Great during your session, and I'll go into each one:

  • Color Complimenting vs Matching
  • Personality
  • Location
  • Hair & Make-up
  • Motion/Comfortability

Note! I am never going to send you a link or a picture and say, “Here! Just wear THIS.” But I will help guide you to what I believe will turn out the best. If you ARE the type of person that prefers to be given more direct guidance on what exactly to wear, I added my Pinterest board with outfits and color schemes to go off of. But remember: your session will be a representation of YOU. Let’s keep it that way :)

Color Complimenting

...Instead of Color Matching

There is a difference between color matching & color complimenting. If you both are wearing the exact same colors, chances are you’re going to blend together in your photos. We aren’t #twinning, we are trying to match colors in a complimentary way. If you are both going to wear white shirts with denim pants, and I ask you to cuddle on a beautifully placed patch of grass, we aren't going to be able to differentiate where You start and where They end.

If you are considering booking a shoot with me, you must have some appreciation for the style of photography I stay consistent with. It's warm, it's earthy, and natural. A common misconception about “earthy tones” is that it is a highly limited scheme. Greens, browns, whites, and blacks: The End. But in reality, every color has a neutral side to it that plays into the same style: Yellow can be mustard, red can be maroon, blue can be a navy. There are plenty of ways to make a variety of colors work. And I promise it will be better than the polka dots & florals you have in your closet waiting to make a grand appearance.

Location

More than likely, to get to the location we’re going to, there’s going to be a little bit of walking or light hiking involved. Bring a pair of shoes that are good for walking, okay to get dusty, and won't break any ankles. If you want to wear heels in the photos, or nicer loafers, we will bring them along and switch into them once we have reached our destination.

Hair & Make-up

At the end of the day, I want you to be the most confident version of yourself that you can possibly be. When you feel comfortable and confident, those emotions are going to pour out of you into the pictures. Not only will it result in a great experience, but also great photos.

If you’re most comfortable with a full face of make-up, dramatic eyelashes, and a face full of glitter, then that's what we will do. If you feel like you’re the most “you” with a bare-face and some lip gloss, that's great too.

You don’t want to go through your finished photos and regret trying to make yourself into someone that isn’t you, just for the sake of taking professional photos. If you do choose to get your hair and make-up  professionally done but don’t know where to start, reach out! I work with some amazing local vendors and can help you out.

Just be aware of the extra time it takes, as well as additional costs.

Motion

Another element to my style is that I aim for a large portion of our session to be "captured candids." Moments where, for a second, you forget to try to look as perfect as possible or stand exactly the right way. Moments where you two are totally in each other's company, laughing, dancing, and enjoying your time together.

Another thing to consider when picking your outfit is how comfortable it is. A majority of the posing prompts we do will require movement. Swaying, sitting, twirling, dancing. Every time you look back at your album, you will remember exactly how you felt in that moment. Instead of remembering feeling stiff, self-conscious, and uncomfortable you will feel natural, comfortable, and in love.

MOOD BOARDS

You made it to the very end! I know it was a lot of information, but I hope it got you excited about what it is we're going to create together. Take the day off work, get your hair done, treat yourself to a little shopping because photo session is going to produce not only images you are going to want to hold on to, but also an experience worth remembering.

Enjoy my board of What to Wear Inspo, send me some of your ideas and I can not only tell you what would be the best, but I will hype you up until you're confident and ready to take the desert by storm.
